Why did you decide to start Salem Style?
I decided to start Salem Style in the winter of 2011 when everyone kept asking me where I got my hat. I made several hats for my friends and family for the holidays, and I would wear my "practice hats". Everyone kept saying things like, "I want one!" and "How much if you made me one!" and "Do you sell them?" These all had me thinking, if I could make something for my friend, why not have the ability to make something for anyone?
What Boston-area maker(s) do you admire?
I admire Patti Talbot from Color My World Crochet. Patti is a friend and mentor of mine, and she makes beautiful work. Patti and I chat almost every day, and it's wonderful to check in with someone so supportive. I also admire Liz Frasier from Witch City Wicks. Her candles are amazing, and seeing her business grow over the years has been excited. Liz also lives in Salem, so of course we have a connection there as well.
What drives your motivation in the grind of the day to day?
I would say that it is inspiration rather than motivation. I find making incredibly inspiring and soothing. It's what I look forward to after the daily grind. I also am inspired by my customers. Hearing that someone absolutely loves what I have made just drives me to make more.
What is something most people don't know about Salem Style?
Hmm... I would say that most people don't know that nothing is knit! I have been crocheting since I was 9. My mom taught me how to crochet, and my grandma let me know that I am at least a 5th generation crocheter. However until recently, I had never even picked up knitting needles. Someday, I hope to add knitted items!
What's one question we should have asked you and what is the answer?
People usually ask if it will still be Salem Style if I move from Salem.
Yes! I am originally from Connecticut and have never had a home town (due to lots of moving), and after I graduated college, I moved into an apartment by myself in Salem. Salem is where I feel that I actually "grew up" on my own and developed into the person I am today. Even if I move out of Salem, it will always be Salem Style, because it's about the inspiration and freedom I found in Salem.
